All Them Cornfields

All Them Cornfields Front CoverPublished in May 2010.

This is a resonant and highly personal story about the vanished world of the U.S.S.R. For more than 40 years this extraordinary country was the centre of John Miller’s working life as a foreign correspondent. He went to the Soviet Union at the height of the East-West Cold War and some of the big stories of the 20th century such as the Great Spy Game, the U-2 drama, the Cuban Missile Crisis and much more besides were played out in front of his notebook.

This book is packed with vivid, wonderfully observed and intriguing details of everyday life in the Soviet Union such as shortages, dealing with the KGB as well as with bedbugs and cockroaches, censorship, living in a Moscow flat with a rabbit called Floppy, drunkenness, dissidents and death.

Mervyn's Russia

Mervyn's Russia Front CoverPublished in January 2010.

Looking back on their lives, most people have a tale to tell, sad or happy. Mervyn’s first volume of reminiscences, Mervyn’s Lot, covered his troubled boyhood in war-torn Swansea of the thirties and forties, and his second memoir, Mila and Mervusya, recounts the gripping tale of his extraordinary adventures with the KGB in Khrushchev’s Russia during the Cold War – described in the Spectator as ‘absorbing’, and ‘thrilling’.

Here, in a third volume, he tells of his life in Pimlico with a colourful Russian wife Ludmilla, following their marriage under the shadow of Lenin’s statue in the Moscow Palace of Weddings in 1969; his return visits to the new, post-Soviet Russia and the many unusual Russians he met; and a splendid Russian wedding on a beautiful Turkish island in the Marmara Sea.

These events, together with the unexpected ups and downs of life in a mixed, Anglo-Russian family, make captivating reading.

Mervyn Matthews taught Russian and Soviet affairs for many years at the University of Surrey, and is a prolific writer and broadcaster.

A Moth on the Fence

A Moth on the Fence Front CoverPublished in June 2009.

When Nikolay Andreyev was compiling his memoirs he said that he was amazed how many ‘near-misses’ there had been in his life and how odd it was that he had survived, whereas others had not.  Come what may, he remained an optimist who tried to see the good in any situation and person, whether they were guards in a Soviet prison camp, professors or international politicians.
